When Lucy was first diagnosed with Goldfield syndrome (a fictional version of a real disorder), her family and team of doctors had to decide how to move forward in Lucy’s best interest, opting to pretend that every day is the Sunday that her accident took place. Because of this, Lucy is represented as a very one-dimensional character, showing that her disability is the focus of her life. In 50 First Dates, Lucy’s family know’s that they cannot cure her, opting to change her version of society.
